Retired seminary professor with Ala. ties dies

FORT WORTH, Texas — Montgomery-native William “Bill” Gerald Caldwell, a retired Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary professor, died March 2. He was 75.

He was a 1954 graduate of Howard College (now Samford University) in Birmingham and received a master of arts in religious education and doctorate from Southwestern Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas. He taught at the seminary for 30 years before retiring in 2006 as associate dean and distinguished professor of administration.

He also taught at Baptist Bible Institute (now the Baptist College of Florida) in Graceville, Fla.; worked in the church training department of the Southern Baptist Sunday School Board (now LifeWay Christian Resources); and served as minister of education for churches in Alabama, Texas and Missouri. He contributed to “Church Administration Handbook” and other Southern Baptist books and periodicals and held membership in the Baptist Association of Christian Educators and the National Association of Church Business Administration.

He was a member of Agape Baptist Church, Fort Worth, Texas; was a Republican Party precinct chairman; and was married for 54 years to Dianne Clemm Caldwell, formerly of Fairfax.

He was the son of longtime Alabama Baptist State Board of Missions Director of Church Training George W. Caldwell.
