ABSC president to call for ‘awakening’

Although Jimmy Jackson could have never anticipated the ever-changing year he would tackle as Alabama Baptist State Convention president, he stands confident in Alabama Baptists’ “tremendous blessings” and “great potential.”

“Our convention leadership is healthy and effective,” said Jackson, senior pastor of Whitesburg Baptist Church, Huntsville, in Madison Baptist Association. “Dr. Rick Lance has gathered around himself a very capable staff, and the churches of our convention have supplied some of their finest as volunteers in positions of leadership.”

Although economic and financial downturns have thrust instability upon the convention’s entities, Jackson believes “this problem affords us an opportunity to grow in faith [and] opens the door to minister to hurting people.”

And helping the hurting is just the kind of ministry Alabama Baptists have abundantly poured into throughout the year, from sending volunteers to help with disaster relief in various places to sustaining top giving through the Cooperative Program.

“During this year, we have faced some important times of decision-making for the convention and State Board of Missions,” said Lance, executive director of the Alabama Baptist State Board of Missions. “The wisdom of Jimmy Jackson has helped us navigate through these challenges very smoothly. I have particularly appreciated his affirmation and support of my role in Baptist life during this past year.”

Citing Jackson’s servant-hearted leadership, Lance said Alabama Baptists are “blessed to have him holding the gavel” as the Nov. 17–18 convention annual meeting at Whitesburg Baptist approaches.

“Jimmy Jackson is eminently qualified to lead our state convention,” Lance said.

“He knows how to preside over deliberative meetings. His clear-minded approach to making decisions has provided a steady hand of leadership for Alabama Baptists. I am so grateful that we have Jimmy Jackson as our president during this time in the life of our state convention.”

And when Jackson delivers his president’s address the evening of Nov. 17, he will stand in his own pulpit, following his church’s youth choir and calling his fellow Baptists “to personal revival in our churches and to a concerted intercession for a spiritual awakening in our nation.”

“It is a blessing to know that the Tuesday evening service will be filled not only with messengers but with many of our loyal members from Whitesburg,” he said. “We are honored to host the Alabama Baptist State Convention.”
