If young Nathaniel of John 1:43–51 had a Facebook profile today, his status would say “cynical,” said Andrew Westmoreland, president of Samford University in Birmingham.
“He is the college student of the 21st century — he’s bright, he’s questioning, he’s a visual learner and he’s skeptical,” he said.
And Samford exists to lead those skeptics to Christ so they will believe, Westmoreland told messengers to the Alabama Baptist State Convention annual meeting during his report Tuesday morning.
This is the way in which Samford University is a Cooperative Program partner in God’s Plan for Sharing in Alabama, he said.
“What a joy it is to share in this Great Commission partnership with Alabama Baptists,” Westmoreland said. “Judson, Samford, Mobile are better because of these relationships (with Alabama Baptists), and I submit to you the world is a better place because of Christian higher education in Alabama.”
In the past year, Samford has adopted a new multiyear plan with six goals that build up three strategic priorities — providing an enriched and more vibrant university experience; engaging the global community in learning, faith and service; and inspiring imagination.
The goals undergird teaching and learning and nurture the spiritual environment on campus, according to the university’s report.
Samford also graduated its first class of doctor of nursing practice students this year and sent more than 100 students and employees on summer missions projects around the world. (TAB)
