Legalizing evil

Legalizing evil

Recently much hype has been heard in favor of electronic bingo in Alabama. However, little or no mention is made as to who pays the bill. It has long since been proven that the majority of gamblers are those of lower incomes, those who can least afford to lose their limited means. Money sorely needed for children’s food and clothing is often gambled away in hopes of “striking it rich.”

It is a sad day when government legalizes evil and calls it good.

True, some people go to neighboring states to gamble, but when gambling is legalized locally, gambling will be proliferated a thousand times over with all the accompanying evils — rise in crime, increased gambling addicts, loss of retail sales, loss of sales tax, increased cost of law enforcement, broken homes, neglected children, increased pawn shops, increased burglaries and increased bankruptcy.

A recent letter to the editor indicated each dollar received from gambling costs over $6 in social and economic benefits. Gambling doesn’t pay. It costs.
