I was heartened to read two items in the May 24 issue of The Alabama Baptist. The first was the interfaith cooperation between Birmingham’s Southside Baptist Church and Temple Emanu-El Synagogue. Accolades to Jonathan Miller, Stephen Jones and the leaders of their respective congregations for the maturity of faith.

At a time when religious tension and division are wreaking havoc worldwide, it is good to see these congregations building bridges rather than walls.

The second item was the Lakeshore Foundation’s work of integrating people with disabilities into the faith community. People with mental retardation and physical disabilities are as much God’s children as those without limiting factors.

Churches that embrace an “all welcome” philosophy need to take a close look at their steep stairs and tiny restrooms.
