For the past year The Alabama Baptist has covered the inspiring story of Brandon Jones, a young man who at the age of 16 was diagnosed with terminal cancer. On June 10 — after four years of battling a formidable disease — he lost his courageous battle. But not before he had the opportunity to leave a lasting impact on those who knew him and those who did not.
Few people would have considered cancer a gift but Brandon, who was a member of Pleasant Grove’s Bethel Baptist Church, knew God had given him something special. He made the most of the time he had left and used his testimony as a means of touching the lives of others.
Brandon said in a previous interview with The Alabama Baptist that he had come to realize that the thing that caused him the most pain-his cancer- was helping change lives, both his and others.
During the interview Brandon talked about dying.
“In one breath, I [will] get my leg back, the use of my arm,” he said. “Let folks realize waking up every day is a miracle. People get caught up in thinking God owes them something. God wakes you up every day with a heartbeat and breath.” In Brandon’s last interview with the paper this past October, he talked about the many phone calls, presents, prayers and donations that he had received from complete strangers.
“You find out there’s a whole lot of decent people out there that you never even knew. God works things out in mysterious ways.”
July 1 would have been his 20th birthday.
