Samford Library receives Stagg manuscripts, photos

The Samford University Library has received a collection of material on theology and church history. The collection was given by Evelyn Stagg and her husband, the late Frank Stagg, who taught theology, served as pastor and wrote 15 books and numerous journal articles throughout a 50-year ministry.

Stagg, a noted theologian and New Testament scholar, died in June 2001 at age 90. He taught New Testament interpretation and Greek at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary 1945-1964, and at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky., 1964-1978.

From 1938 to 1999, Stagg amassed a wealth of information in the form of correspondence, articles, speeches, commentaries, book reviews and photographs. His own writings addressed a variety of contemporary issues such as civil rights, Vietnam, gender equality, ecumenism and aging.

Stagg’s  personal manuscripts and rare books from his library are housed in the Special Collections area of the Samford Library. (TAB)
