Workplace discriminations complaints filed by Muslims, Sikhs and Arab Americans have more than doubled since Sept. 11 – and have nearly tripled from the same time period one year ago, according to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.
At a public hearing Dec. 11, the commission noted that from Sept. 11 to Dec. 6 last year, just 64 such complaints were filed.
Most of the 166 complaints filed since Sept. 11 this year have been lodged by Muslims who had been terminated from their jobs, the commission said.
Most complaints were lodged against companies with “no policies and no preventive measures, allowing the employment environment to be infected by ethnic or religious prejudice,” said Commission Chairwoman Cari M. Dominguez, The Washington Post reported.
Arshad Majid, of the National Association of Muslim Lawyers, said actual incidents of discrimination said actual incidents of discrimination could be higher since some Muslims are reluctant to file a complaint at a time when “law enforcement is targeting the very people whose help they need.”
