The demijohns at Clinton Baptist Church, Eutaw, are large jugs positioned in the attic thrust downward through holes in the ceiling.
The system has operated successfully since the church was built in 1857.
While the idea was borrowed from classical Greek theater, the deacons have been using the demijohns as acoustic control for their pastors.
The sound is affected by placing corks in the jugs or by removing them.
With the stoppers removed, the sound is louder than when they are in place.
There are four large jugs in each of the four corners of the ceiling, and a 10-gallon size jug is located over the pulpit.
Two smaller jugs are located along each of the two sides of the church.
