Golden Acres Baptist Church, Phoenix City, plans to begin construction on a $3.3 million facility at the beginning of the summer. The church decided in 2000 to plan for the new building and held its first building fund banquet January 2001.
“We are growing by leaps and bounds. Sunday School attendance has jumped from 150-200 last year to about 400 this year,” said Wanda Simmons, ministry assistant. “It was time for a new facility.”
Simmons said the pastor, Tommy Fountain Sr., is in awe.
“He knows it’s totally God’s work,” Simmons said. “We have had to begin holding two morning worship services. Our early morning service is almost full, and the 11 a.m. is packed.”
The 27,000-square-foot-plus church will be located on the corner of South Railroad Street and Lakewood Drive.
“One of the prayer warriors in our church had been praying over this land, and when it was put out in front of us, we jumped on it,” said Simmons. “You have to want to get to the church where it is right now. The other location is more convenient.”
The new facility will have a new sanctuary, an office complex, a two-story educational building and a multipurpose building for a fellowship hall, kitchen and gymnasium.
“Everybody is ready to start digging now,” Simmons said. “Several members have said they’re ready to take up their shovels.”
