The University of Mobile’s (UM) 12th annual “Art With a Southern Drawl,” which features the best in visual arts from seven Southern states, will be on display at the Donald Gallery at the Donald Gallery at the University of Mobile April 1-30.
The exhibit is open weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Sundays April 6, 13 and 27 2-4 p.m. Admission is free. The public is invited to a reception April 6, 2-4 p.m.
The annual juried exhibition and competition represents a wide range of media, styles, themes and techniques.
The competition is open to artists working in any media, and only original art is accepted. During the April 2003 show, a total of 97 pieces will be on display.
“This is a fantastic show featuring a good mix from the region by highly skilled and professional artists,” said Charles M. Clark, dean of the University of Mobile College of arts and sciences and director of “Drawl.”
“This show has grown in prestige over the prestige over the past dozen years. It’s an opportunity to see the best of the region.”
Artists must be either born or currently live in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee or Texas.
Prizes will be awarded for Best in Show, Award of Excellence, Spirit of the South Award, Southern Humor Award: I Did It and I’m Glad and Merit Awards.
Joseph Mella, curator of the Vanderbilt University Fine Arts Gallery, is judge for this year’s “Drawl.”
Wanda Sullivan, UM adjunct instructor in art, is assistant director of “Drawl.”
