Hillwood celebrates 50 years

Hillwood Baptist Church, Huntsville, experienced a time of fellowship and renewal as it celebrated its 50th anniversary the week of June 17-23.

“It was a great time of being able to come together as a body and renew relationships,” said Dana Workman, associate pastor of music/education.

“It was a great time of fellowship, ministry, and nostalgia, as well.”

The church was founded in 1952 as a mission church of Huntsville’s Jackson Way Baptist Church, and has changed locations four times.

The homecoming/anniversary committee planned a week of special events to commemorate different groups within the church, which culminated in a homecoming service on Sunday morning, followed by dinner the grounds. “We asked, ‘How can we make this different?’” Workman said, “We wanted to emphasize not just one day, but the whole week.”

So the weeknight events recognized the church’s senior adults, single adults, youth, former staff, former choir members and former softball teams.

Charles Freeman is the current pastor of Hillwood, but was unable to comment due to a mission trip to the Ukraine.
