Some 300 people, many carrying banners and signs, gathered on the Statehouse steps in Montgomery April 4 to voice their continued opposition to gambling.
The latest anti-gambling efforts are poised against attempts to bring video poker to Alabama.
Dan Ireland, executive director of Alabama Citizens Action Program (ALCAP), led the rally in which participants also voiced their support for legislators opposed to gambling.
“I had a lot of favorable comments and congratulatory statements,” Ireland said.
“I would say, all in all, that it was a very positive and favorable rally.”
Following the rally, Ireland said participants “flooded” the House and Senate floors, where they met with legislators and encouraged them to fight video poker.
Ireland said those who support video gambling do not have enough votes for any legislation to be successful.
And the rally proved the church has not wavered in its opposition, he added.
“It’s very important, because they (legislators) need to know the no vote (against a state lottery) was a stand by the churches,” he said.
