When smiling people poured into Mount Zion Baptist Church, Cullman, with hands full of casseroles and baked goods, Randy Sellers knew something was up.
On Aug. 28, the East Cullman Baptist Association church threw a surprise celebration for its pastor of 20 years.
“I didn’t even get to preach [that day],” Sellers said with a laugh.
The congregation put together a DVD of pictures from his life and interviews with his parents and in-laws. Mount Zion Baptist presented him with a commemorative watch and his wife, Donna, who has served as the church pianist for 20 years, with a gift certificate.
A fellowship meal followed the DVD presentation.
Around 250 people were in attendance — that’s 100 more people than on a normal Sunday. Of course, some of them were family; Sellers’ two sisters, aunt, uncle, parents and in-laws all attended the celebration. Sellers, who accepted the call to preach in 1983, earned his bachelors degree in religion from Athens State University. He served at Friendship Baptist Church, Addison, for seven years and was led to Mount Zion in 1991.
In Randy Folds’ opinion, Sellers has “set a good example.”
“He’s not just a church leader but a community leader, coaching teams at the schools and attending youth events,” said Folds, chairman of deacons at Mount Zion. “[Sellers] is more like a family pastor, a great hands-on and personal-type pastor.”
