University of Mobile crowns Wilkerson

Sarah Wilkerson, a junior music education major at the University of Mobile from Huntsville was crowned Miss University of Mobile 2002 Nov. 23, during the Miss University of Mobile Scholarship Pageant.

She will complete in the Miss Alabama pageant in June, a preliminary that leads to the Miss America Pageant in Atlantic City.

Miss University of Mobile serves as the official hostess of the university.

Her responsibilities include participation in alumni activities, homecoming, dedications, receptions and various community and student events.

Wilkerson, who won the talent portion of the competition, performed “Le Polichinelle” by Villa-Lobos on the piano. She received over $1,200 in scholarship money.

Wilkerson’s platform is entitled “Heart to Heart,” a self esteem program designed for girls. Wilkerson will devote much of her time this year visiting schools and churches and talking with girls about self esteem issues, eating disorders and relationships.

“Low self-esteem affects so many girls in their everyday life,” Wilkerson said. “It affects their relationship with the Lord and all areas of their life. So many of my friends growing up and girls I have spent time with at church and in Disciple Nows have dealt with low self esteem. It’s very important how these girls perceive themselves and how they function in their everyday life.”

Wilkerson, a 2000 graduate of Grissom High School, is the daughter of Gary and Barbara Wilkerson of Huntsville. She also serves as youth director of First Baptist Church, Mobile.

Other Miss University of Mobile pageant finalists were Hali Williams of Thomasville, first runner-up, and Margie Younce of Mobile, second runner-up. Kara Dyson of Chunchula received the title of Miss Congeniality. Cassidy Lofton of Excel won the swimsuit portion of the competition.
