Danny High Spears II, youth pastor at Logan Road Baptist Church, Ozark, died of colon cancer Sept. 16.
Spears, age 33, and his wife, Rhonda were planning to graduate from The Baptist College of Florida in December 2003.
Friends, professors and co-workers describe Spears as someone who brought life wherever he went.
Charles Goldsmith, pastor of Logan Road Baptist, worked with Spears and officiated at his funeral.
“When he asked me to preach his funeral he told me, ‘I don’t want it to be sad,”’ Goldsmith said. “Hugh gave me the strength in the presence of God when things got tough… and when times were smooth he would challenge me,” Goldsmith said.
Members of the youth group he ministered to remember Spears.
“He didn’t want Sunday School answers,” said youth group member Angela Sentel. “He wanted you to find it in the Bible, explain it and prove it to him,” she said.
Sierra Sentel, Angela’s twin sister, remembers, “If something was wrong with you, he was the first one to notice. He would bug you until you told him what was going on.”
“In hard times he always said to put one foot in front of the other. That’s what we have to do now,” David Goldsmith said. Spears is survived by his wife, Rhonda, their two children, his parents and three siblings.
