Hinson retires after 30 years at Spring Hill Avenue

After more than 30 years of service at Spring Hill Avenue Baptist Church, Mobile, Minister of Music Billy G. Hinson retired.

Hinson’s announcement came on the heels of his May retirement from a 32-year position as professor of history at the University of Mobile. He obtained much of his music knowledge from his oldest brother, a voice major at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge and quartet singer.

When Hinson taught in a public school in Louisiana, a small church needed a music director so he filled the role. He went on to serve other churches, including Riverside Baptist Church, Mobile, before coming to Spring Hill Avenue Baptist.

Hinson said the most enjoyable aspects of music ministry have included presenting the gospel in song and identifying and encouraging musical talent in people when they didn’t necessarily realize they had it. He praised his wife of 46 years, Shirley, for her support. “She’s always been right with me, singing in the choir, singing in the ladies ensemble,” Hinson said.

He also acknowledged those who have served alongside him at Spring Hill Avenue Baptist, including pianist Fran Trotter. “She’s just so committed to being there,” Hinson said. “She has just been fantastic.”

A reunion dinner was held Aug. 27 for him and current and former choir members. During the worship service Aug. 28, the church recognized Hinson and former and current choir members united to sing “I Will Arise.” His son Jason also sang during the service. Afterward the congregation enjoyed a special luncheon and time of fellowship. Hinson will continue serving as minister of music at the Mobile Baptist Association church until his replacement is found.
