Christmas Is Not Your Birthday: Experience the Joy of Living and Giving Like Jesus

Mike Slaughter. Nashville: Abingdon Press, 2011. 112 pp. (Paperback).

According to Mike Slaughter, who bills himself as “lead pastor and chief dreamer” of a church in Ohio, Christmas has been “hijacked and exploited.” So we’ll cut back a little on our spending and give a little more to Lottie Moon. That will make things better, right?

Right. But there is more.  While “Christmas Is Not Your Birthday” exhorts readers to focus on “the broader missional meaning of Jesus’ birth,” it also goes a step further. Jesus’ wish list, contends Slaughter, would include feeding the hungry, caring for the sick and visiting the imprisoned — not just sending a check to support those who do.

The author pulls no punches as he lays out the case for where he believes our focus should be. Although the narrative gets a little difficult to stay with at times, the point is clear and the message is convicting.
