BWA official observers of Liberian elections

MONROVIA, Liberia — Baptist World Alliance (BWA) leaders were invited to be official observers during the Oct. 11 elections in Liberia. The elections marked a turning point on the road to freedom in that country after many years of civil war. The BWA representatives were General Secretary Denton Lotz; Emmett Dunn, director of the BWA youth department and a Liberian; and Frank Adams, BWA regional secretary for All Africa Baptist Fellowship.

The team witnessed the thousands who lined up to vote as early as 3 a.m. and said the proceedings were mostly peaceful. The “well planned and organized” voting did not produce a clear winner, however. On election eve, Baptist leaders gathered in Providence Baptist Church, where the country of Liberia, led by former slaves from the United States, declared its independence more than 150 years ago.
