Culbreth named Alabama’s 2012 Teacher of the Year

Suzanne Culbreth, a geometry teacher at Spain Park High School in Hoover, was named Alabama’s 2012 Teacher of the Year during the 2012 Alabama Stars in Education Awards ceremony in Montgomery on May 9.

According to the Alabama Department of Education, Culbreth assumes the role of official spokesperson for Alabama teachers for the next year.

Culbreth, who earned her undergraduate degree from Auburn University and her master’s degree from The University of Montevallo, is a national board certified teacher. She has taught a total of 29 years and is currently in her fourth year at Spain Park High School.

She said her overall goal as a teacher is to instruct students on how to think and how to learn. “I think part of it is working hard to improve every single day and trying to meet the needs of my students where they are … not being complacent.”

Culbreth is married to James, minister of education at Meadow Brook Baptist Church, Birmingham. “The support of my family and my church family has been very important,” she noted, adding she believes her teaching success can be attributed to having that support and encouragement.
