Taylor Road celebrates 20th anniversary, looks to future

At only 20 years old, Taylor Road Baptist Church, Montgomery Association, may still be finding its way, but if its future is anything like its past, the days ahead will be bright.

Since its beginnings in 1983, Taylor Road’s membership has grown from 53 to 1,271 and the buildings have grown with the members.

“Our vision for the future is still unfolding, but we believe God has a tremendous plan and future for Taylor Road Baptist Church,” said Pastor Andy Hepburn.

“Because of the vision of those in the past, Taylor Road Baptist Church has 28 acres of land in the heart of Montgomery’s growth to develop and become the church that has a place for everyone to belong.”

A celebration of the church’s 20th anniversary was held July 18. Members recalled the early days as a mission church of Eastern Hills Baptist Church, Montgomery.

Taylor Road officially became a church of its own standing in 1985 with 105 charter members.

The church’s pastor for 19 of the 20 years, Joe Godfrey, was on hand to preach during the celebration as was former Minister of Music Scott Lee, who led worship.

Donnie Arrant, former minister of music and education, and Elizabeth Godfrey, former member, provided special music.

Joe Godfrey — pastor of First Baptist Church, Pleasant Grove, in Birmingham Association, and president of the Alabama Baptist State Convention — said anniversary celebrations are important to reflect on blessings from God in the past as well as a time to renew God’s vision for the future.

“God’s vision for Taylor Road Baptist Church will become clear if you make God’s nature your own,” he said.
