To mark its centennial Corinth Heights Baptist Church, Haleyville, celebrated the day with a churchwide birthday party.
The festivities began with a special parade by the children. They marched into the 10 a.m. service carrying paper torches as the congregation of about 250 sang “Onward, Christian Soldiers.” According to Jackie Mize, chairperson for the Corinth Heights Baptist historical committee, the procession corresponded with the anniversary theme “Carrying the Christian torch into the future.”
Al Hood, director of missions for Winston Baptist Association, led an opening prayer. Visitors and direct descendants of the church’s charter members of 1912 were then recognized.
Mize said the service did not include a message but rather was set up in a “story, song, story” format.
Also recognized during the service was the active member with the most years in the church, Mildred Finley. Jerry Armor, Alabama Baptist Historical Commission representative, presented the church with a plaque. After Corinth Heights Pastor Lance Hogan’s closing remarks, everyone congregated in the fellowship hall for a luncheon and sang “Happy Birthday” to the church. Mize said the birthday cake was made in the shape of the number 100. Following lunch, everyone went outside and released 100 balloons to conclude the afternoon.
Hogan noted the church is really working with the young families and focusing on outreach to those families in the community.
