NEW YORK — The AIDS epidemic is growing fastest in countries of the former Soviet bloc, where an estimated 1 million people were expected to have been infected with the AIDS-causing HIV virus by the end of 2001, according to a report released Nov. 28 by the United Nations.
In ex-communist states in Eastern Europe, Russia and other countries of the former Soviet Union, “HIV incidence is rising faster in this region that anywhere else in the world,” concluded the annual report from UNAIDS.
The high rate of infection is caused partly by social and economic uncertainty in the region, the report found.
