Booked solid for months now, Alabama-based music group EPIC Light (Eternal Peace In Christ) has seen God open doors and entire families saved, said vocalist and lead guitarist Jeremy Houston.
The contemporary Christian group formed in 2012 when Houston, a member of Moundville Baptist Church in Hale Baptist Association, met couple Lisa and Jud Cameron. All three were at a youth camp to perform and began playing some music together that day. Houston, who had been experiencing a growing desire to start a band to witness to people through song, felt led to share that desire with the Camerons.
The three decided to form a group with Lisa Cameron as a vocalist and keyboardist and Jud Cameron as a vocalist and drummer. They then added two more members, Joe Crawford, who plays bass guitar, and Kerry Shows, who plays acoustic guitar. “[God] brought us together,” Houston noted.
The group began to pray about where the Lord wanted to use them, and Houston said “it’s been such a blessing” to witness to others through their music.
One of these witnessing opportunities for EPIC Light came just recently when they were invited by a chaplain to perform at a prison. Not knowing what to expect, the group arrived and watched as the room they were going to perform in filled up.
During the performance, Houston said he spotted one particular man sitting on the front row who looked very angry at first.
“As I was playing, I [saw] a tear rolling down his [cheek],” he said of the change he began to witness in the man. And when Houston began to share his testimony, the man began to cry out loud.
After the performance, Houston felt led by the Lord to talk to him. Houston was wearing a cross that Crawford had made. Houston took it off his neck and told the man he wanted him to have it. The man replied that he had never been given anything. After witnessing to him about God’s love, Houston said the man was so excited that he helped the group load their equipment. “It was a humbling experience,” Houston noted.
EPIC Light plays cover songs and also writes their own original music. In addition to playing at churches and even out of state, they also play for the youth groups of Moundville Baptist and East McFarland Baptist Church, Tuscaloosa, on a regular basis.
The group is currently working on its first album and saying they hope to “get into the studio” in early 2014.
Along with Houston, Crawford and Shows also are members of Moundville Baptist, and EPIC Light recently played a new song titled “Son of God” at the church. The song was written by Houston and the Camerons.
Jason Duckett, pastor of Moundville Baptist, said he is excited about the manner in which God is using EPIC Light in his own church, the community and beyond.
“Their creativity and giftedness glorify the God of mercy Who uses whomever He chooses to share the gospel,” Duckett noted. “While God does not need our contributions or talents to accomplish His tasks, He wants to use us by filling us with Himself.”
