LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Executives at the Louisville, Ky., headquarters of the Presbyterian Church (USA) April 22 cut 66 full-time employees — 12 percent of the church’s total work force — as part of a $5.7 million cutback.
Church leaders notified 43 of the affected workers on Monday and announced several programming cutbacks in order to save money. Many of the employees receiving pink slips were out of work within a week, with all the layoffs becoming official May 3.
The 2.5 million-member church has pored over its 2003 budget to find ways to make up for a $3 million shortfall while still paying for $2.5 million in new spending. Income for the church, including $900,000 in investments, fell short of projections, according to Presbyterian News Service.
The total projected budget for next year, which will have to be approved by the General Assembly Council (which acts as a board of directors), will be $130.1 million.
