NEW YORK — The National Council of Churches (NCC) has recovered its fiscal health after teetering on the edge of financial insolvency, officials of the New York-based agency said.
Though still cautious about the future, NCC leaders said they finished the most recent fiscal year on June 30 with a balanced budget and with small surpluses for five of the last six months.
The umbrella group for 36 mainline Protestant and Orthodox churches has seen its work force shrink from 102 to 43 in just two years. Officials also depleted the council's reserve funds, from $24 million to about $2 million.
NCC General Secretary Bob Edgar said he knows that rebuilding the council’s financial reputation is key to keeping it afloat, and promised that fiscal discipline is here to stay.
