Plus One The Promise (143 Records/Atlantic)

Boy bands. They seem to be growing on trees these days. Acts like N’Sync and the Backstreet Boys are topping just about every chart the music industry has to offer. One might wonder if another one of these groups could possibly offer something different from the other teen sensations that have captured the hearts of young listeners across the world. With its debut album, The Promise, Plus One brings its faith to the table and looks to serve its listeners something fresh.

Plus One’s music is full of characteristic pop rhythms and R&B melodies, yet its content sets the group apart from its contemporaries. The album kicks off with the group’s debut single, “Written on My Heart.” The song proclaims “You gave me your love/Lifted me up … Now I know right from the start/Your love was written on my heart.” Songs like “God Is in This Place” and “The Promise” remind the listener God is ever-present in our lives. “I Will Rescue You” and “When the Spirit Gets Weak” are songs of hope and deliverance. Many of the songs use the word “you” rather than “God,” and at times, seem to convey the message of faith indirectly.

For the parents who worry about the content of the music that is dominating the airwaves, you can rest assured that the guys of Plus One are fully committed to Christ and sharing His love with those who will listen.
