A medical doctor and professor who served in Birmingham for more than three decades is the latest inductee into the Alabama Women’s Hall of Fame (AWHOF). The AWHOF, founded in 1970, is housed on the campus of Judson College in Marion. The ceremony was held March 6.
Dr. Hazel Mansell Gore, born and educated in Australia and considered “a giant among women in medicine in Alabama,” lived in Birmingham from 1969 to 2001. During that time, she practiced and taught medicine in the department of pathology and the department of obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Alabama in Birmingham (UAB).
She was recruited by UAB from Harvard Medical School, where she had been working since 1953 as an assistant in pathology under Dr. A.T. Hertig, one of the founding fathers of modern gynecologic pathology.
Dr. Edward E. Partridge, director of the Comprehensive Cancer Center and professor of gynecologic oncology at UAB, said, “Her influence on physicians in training at [UAB] was absolutely remarkable.”
Although state law mandated that she retire at age 70, she continued teaching, consulting and publishing as a volunteer until she died in 2001.
