FBC Tanner marks 50th anniversary, looks ahead

First Baptist Church, Tanner, which began as a mission, marked its 50th anniversary Jan. 5.

The Limestone Baptist Association church celebrated its anniversary Jan. 26 with an extended morning worship service and a fellowship meal, said associate pastor Keith Turberville.

A committee headed by Sandra Johnson planned the day’s events, which featured the vocal talents of Ronnie Sims, former worship leader of the church, and Thad Prater, a former member. Turberville said Ray McElhaney, pastor emeritus, gave reflections on his 37 years as the church’s pastor.

The message of Pastor Gary Enfinger was on “Preparing for the Future” and referenced 2 Kings 4:1–7, Turberville said.

During the celebration, Limestone Association Director of Missions Robert Fullerton presented a plaque to the church and Nancy Beasley, representative for the Alabama Baptist Historical Commission, presented a certificate.

In 1962, a survey in the Tanner community revealed the need for a Baptist church there, Turberville said. Capshaw Baptist Church in Limestone Association started the mission church, which met in homes and a restaurant before constructing its own building.

First, Tanner, began with 31 charter members, eight of whom were present at the recent anniversary celebration, Turberville said.

“Our vision is to continue to reach our community and our area for Christ,” Enfinger said. “Our desire is to be a church that continues to minister not only in its local community but also in the areas our church reaches.”
