Boaz’s Bel Air Baptist marks 50 years of service

Bel Air Baptist Church, Boaz, celebrated its 50th anniversary Jan. 19 with an afternoon celebration service.

Teresa Nelson, church clerk and member for 49 years, said a regular morning service took place, then an anniversary luncheon, followed by a special anniversary service. Between 100 and 150 people attended, she said, and the youth choir provided special music.

Wendell Dutton, Alabama Baptist Historical Commission representative, presented the Marshall Baptist Association church with a certificate commemorating the milestone. Dan Nelson, church member and Teresa’s husband, read memories written and submitted by former and current church members and church member Gerald Cofield put together a slideshow about the church’s history.

Two former pastors and the families of two deceased pastors, as well as charter members, were recognized during the service.

Pastor Nick Mitchell said Bel Air Baptist was a mission church plant by Mount Vernon Baptist Church, Albertville, so Mount Vernon Baptist’s current pastor David Martin also attended the service.

Mitchell said he hopes the next 50 years resemble the last 50. “The (anniversary) day was wonderful and to see the amount of lives touched in this place was just awesome.”
