Bob Jackson and Rob Jackson. Nashville: Rainer Publishing, 2014. 354 pp. (Paperback).
In my professional career, I have been asked to read quite a number of manuscripts written by people I know and love. I did not always love their writing; some have been simply unpublishable, while many others have elicited the gently (I hope) delivered advice to the authors not to quit their day jobs just yet.
When Bob Jackson, my former associate pastor, asked me to read and critique his manuscript, I agreed with some trepidation. The trepidation proved unfounded: “Come and See” is a life-changing book. Instead of gentle advice to focus elsewhere, I found myself encouraging Jackson to finish the book. I, like others who read preliminary drafts, found myself profoundly impacted by this book that chronicles evidence, primarily witnessed by Jackson, that Jesus is alive and active in our lives today.
Acutely aware of his health and advancing age, he asked his son, Rob Jackson (my pastor), to complete the book if he failed to live long enough. After Bob Jackson’s death from a sudden heart attack, Rob Jackson organized and rewrote as needed, then brought the book to publication in an act of love not only for his dad and mentor but for potential readers whose relationship with Jesus will be transformed through this book.
