Hanceville’s Bethlehem East celebrates 125th anniversary

The bell that used to be housed in the original church building’s belfry was rung for the first time in decades to open the 125th anniversary service at Bethlehem East Baptist Church, Hanceville, Oct. 5.

“The look on people’s faces when the bell rang was one of such surprise,” said Rebecca McAnnally, anniversary committee chairperson and wife of Pastor Dale McAnnally.

More than 150 people participated in the anniversary service where Scott Adams, associate pastor for First Baptist Church, Holly Pond, shared the morning message.

Hanceville Mayor Kenneth Nail gave a special presentation as did Rep. Randall Shedd and Alabama Baptist Historical Commission representative Jerry Armor.

A 1984 painting of the church building by deacon Roy Lee was displayed and also was printed on the front of the celebration service bulletin, McAnnally said. She and 10 other church members served on the anniversary committee.

Dale McAnnally said he would like to see the church “built back up” and “thrive and be here when the Lord comes back.”
