The hum of sewing machines combined with scissors cutting fabric and ladies making small talk as they iron out the finishing touches on their project can be heard at First Baptist Church, Greenville, on any given Monday night.
The church’s Woman’s Missionary Union (WMU) members are turning pillowcases into dresses for the Little Dresses for Africa ministry, a nonprofit Christian organization that distributes simple dresses to orphanages, churches and schools across Africa. Since the ministry’s creation in 2008 countless dresses have been sent to 31 countries in Africa, as well as Guatemala, Honduras, Cambodia, South Dakota and the Appalachian Mountain regions, among other areas.
The ministry also created the Britches for Boys program in which shorts are made for boys at the same locations. First, Greenville, participates in both efforts.
With this ministry the WMU ladies aren’t just sending a new garment — they’re sending the hope of Christ as the gospel is shared with each recipient. As each item is sewn prayers are said for the children, their families and their communities.
