Over a period of approximately 1,600 years, using some 40- plus writers and encompassing 66 books, God has written an amazing love letter to mankind. We know it as the Holy Bible. We revere it because it truly is sacred literature. It is, by its own testimony, God-breathed. The infallible, inerrant Word of God has literally nothing in human literature that can equal it.
Human neglect
Yet, sometimes we betray ourselves and our testimony about the Bible by failing to read it. Even when we do, we have a tendency to neglect large segments of the ultimate book.
Several years ago I became aware that “people of the book” must truly be “people of the book.” My church family at First Baptist Church, Athens, embraced the idea. Beginning in 2008 we encouraged our people to read through the Bible in its entirety every year. By 2010 we made printed calendar booklet plans available annually to all who would join us in the journey. Dozens of our members now make it a practice to read through the Bible, including genealogies and tabernacle details, every year. Those who have done so testify to the amazing value it has been to their personal lives.
