Talented piano and voice students in Alabama, Mississippi and Florida may compete for $5,250 in prizes in the first Gulf Coast Steinway Society Awards Festival, set for Sept. 12 on University of Mobile’s (UMobile) campus.
The competition is for piano and voice students in middle school, high school and college levels.
Students must have studied with their current music teacher for at least six months prior to the festival, and the teacher must be a member of the Gulf Coast Steinway Society.
Awarding talent
“Our purpose is to award talented young piano and voice students to give them an opportunity to perform and work with master teachers,” said Kadisha Onalbayeva, associate professor of piano at UMobile who has earned the international status of “Steinway Artist.”
The competition is the first project of the new Gulf Coast Steinway Society, a nonprofit organization formed by Onalbayeva, Steinway and Sons NYC and other individuals to promote fine music through education and piano performance.
The public is invited to attend the event where participants will perform two memorized pieces of contrasting styles. Award winners will be selected on the basis of their performance.
