CALAIS, France — Despite authorities promising to not destroy places of worship, a church and mosque were destroyed in a camp for migrants and refugees in France.
In Calais, bulldozers moved into the camp Feb. 1 and tore down the mosque and St. Michael’s Church, a makeshift chapel serving mainly Orthodox Ethiopian Christians, according to National Catholic Reporter (NCR).
“Devastated residents watched the destruction,” charity Help Refugees UK wrote on its Facebook page. “The bulldozers are currently tearing down the church while residents scramble to rescue what they can from the building.”
The camp has become one of the focal points of Europe’s migration crisis with more than 1 million people arriving to the region by sea in 2015, according to NCR.
