School district bans prayer gathering posting

WAYNE CITY, Ill. — After opposition from an atheist legal organization, an Illinois school district has banned its local high school students from posting on their school’s Facebook page about prayer gatherings.

The Wisconsin-based Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF) complained to the Wayne City Community Unit School District 100 after a student posted an announcement on Wayne City High School’s Facebook page about a prayer gathering in October 2016, according to The Christian Post.

The post noted that all students were welcome to participate in “Bring Your Bible to School Day” and meet in the school library at 7:50 a.m. “to pray over the day.”

At least one local resident informed FFRF, and the organization’s attorney sent a letter to the school district’s superintendent.

“This Facebook posting violates the basic constitutional prohibition by creating the appearance that the school and, by extension, the district prefer religion to nonreligion and Christianity to all other religions,” the letter states.

It demanded the school district’s social media accounts not be used for such purposes in the future and the school district complied, the Post reported. (TAB)
