When a pastor passes away, his family may not have enough money for a proper burial. But the Alabama Baptist Benefit Society (ABBS) can help with funeral expenses.
The only auxiliary organization of its kind in the United States, the ABBS was founded in 1904 by a group of pastors for this purpose.
The society collects a $1 memorial gift from each member for a member who has died.
Presently there are more than 1,700 members, which means that same amount in dollars is sent to the families of deceased members.
Paul Moore, executive secretary-treasurer of the ABBS, said the society acts as a ministry and works like a savings plan for its members.
“It’s a very rewarding work that I do helping these families,” Moore said.
Membership is open to all church and association staff members and their spouses who are 60 years of age or younger, as well as all state convention personnel and their spouses 60 or younger. It is portable — meaning membership can be maintained even outside Alabama — and can be held until death.
Benefits do not decrease with age or retirement.
