Two Alabama Baptist child care teams were among the final few disaster relief groups from the state assisting in Louisiana and Mississippi following Hurricane Isaac’s landfall Aug. 29. They served Sept. 11–19 at a FEMA center in Chalmette, La. Three mud-out teams were still working in Mississippi at press time.
While Alabama Baptists and Southern Baptists nationwide do what they do as a calling to minister, the efforts continue to gain attention from those outside the denomination, the latest being Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano. She called North American Mission Board President Kevin Ezell to thank Southern Baptist volunteers who have diligently served the affected area.
“She called to say how much she appreciates everything [the] volunteers are doing and to acknowledge that our efforts are a key part of the response,” Ezell said. “The investment Southern Baptists have made in disaster relief over the years has helped us become a key partner in times of crisis. I am grateful for all of our partners who make this happen. We know that many needs will be met and that ultimately many lives will be impacted with the gospel.”
