Alabama Baptist Disaster Relief work in Huffman, Texas, is “fast and furious,” said John Hayes, the ABDR white hat leader on site.
“By the end of the day (July 15), we’ll have over 200 work requests,” he said.
After Hurricane Beryl battered the area and knocked over trees, an ABDR admin team and feeding unit got set up July 11 at First Baptist Church Huffman in preparation for chain saw crews to arrive. Teams from Southeast Alabama, Clarke and West Central Baptist associations then worked over the weekend to clear trees and debris and will be joined by crews from Colbert-Lauderdale and Madison Baptist associations today.
A laundry unit should also be set up today to help meet needs in the community, Hayes said.
‘That’s why we come’
Mark Wakefield, state DR strategist, said teams from South Carolina will also been joining ABDR crews in Huffman later this week, but that more Alabama teams will likely be needed to finish the job requests.
“I think depending on the help we get, it could take up to three weeks,” he said.
Since getting set up, ABDR teams have already seen two people make decisions to follow Christ. A chaplain talked with both individuals and shared the gospel with them.
“Both said, ‘The load is gone; I can breathe,'” said Cookie Baker, who is serving as assistant white hat leader in Huffman. “The visual difference in them was just astounding. … That’s why we come.”
