With the theme Now to Him Who is Able, Barry Holcomb hopes church leaders leave the 2007 Alabama Baptist Pastors Conference remembering that “God is able no matter the circumstances.”
“The only victory in the Christian life comes from Christ living through you, and that is the whole focus of that theme,” said Holcomb, pastor of Bethany Baptist Church, Andalusia, and president of this year’s Pastors Conference.
He attributes the idea for the theme to John Avant, who wrote “The Passion Promise: Living a Life Only God Can Imagine,” an exposition of Ephesians 3:20–21 about living victoriously in Christ.
“[Avant] claims those verses are life verses for him, and I’ve used it so much in my life,” Holcomb said.
This year’s conference, to be held Nov. 11–12 at Cottage Hill Baptist Church, Mobile, will include a 6 p.m. Sunday evening session featuring a message by Fred Wolfe, pastor emeritus of Cottage Hill Baptist and founder of Barnabas ministries in Fairhope.
Other speakers delivering messages based on the conference theme are, in order of appearance:
- David Crump, pastor of Aspen Park Baptist Church, Broken Arrow, Okla.
- Jimmy Jackson, pastor of Whitesburg Baptist Church, Huntsville.
- Randy Singer, law professor and Christian novelist from Virginia Beach, Va.
- Gary Hollingsworth, senior director of the cultural evangelism division and interim evangelization group leader for the North American Mission Board.
- John Avant, pastor of First Baptist Church, West Monroe, La.
- Junior Hill, an evangelist from Hartselle.
- Wayne Barber, teaching pastor of Hoffmantown Church, Albuquerque, N.M.
- Don Graham, a revivalist from Clanton.
In addition to the speakers, 12 Alabama Baptists will offer prayers throughout the program and the Cottage Hill worship choir and orchestra will bring special music. Steve White, associate pastor in praise and worship ministries at Cottage Hill, will lead worship throughout the conference.
“I think it’s going to be a great Bible-preaching conference to encourage pastors and other ministers,” Holcomb said. “I just want to encourage pastors, because the ministry is rewarding but difficult. I know that guys are going to come to this conference needing encouragement. I just see the Pastors Conference as a time to come under great preaching of God’s Word and let it revive them.”
