Alabama’s three Baptist colleges were among 42 member institutions of the International Association of Baptist Colleges and Universities (IABCU) listed in the 2010 rankings of America’s Best Colleges.
Samford University in Birmingham ranked for the third consecutive year in the top tier of national doctoral research universities, according to the annual college rankings released by U.S. News & World Report. Samford rose four spots to 126, where it is tied with the University of Utah.
There are 262 National Universities, and Samford and Baylor University in Waco, Texas, are the only IABCU institutions classified in this category.
Samford was reclassified as a national university in 2006 because of the diversity of undergraduate and graduate degrees offered. Samford currently has 26 doctoral, master’s and baccalaureate degree programs in 138 majors, minors and concentrations.
In addition to the U.S. News & World Report honor, Samford was also among 10 IABCU institutions listed in the America’s Best Colleges list by Forbes.com.
The University of Mobile was one of 10 IABCU institutions listed in the Universities-Master’s category, ranking in the third tier. Judson College in Marion was also among four IABCU schools noted in the Liberal Arts Colleges category. Judson was noted in the fourth tier.
U.S. News and World Report, which began ranking America’s best colleges in 1983, bases its college ratings on data provided by the institutions and by a survey of administrators at peer colleges and universities.
Institutions are grouped into four categories according to a system developed by the Carnegie Fund for the Advancement of Teaching.
The two larger categories, Universities-Master’s and Baccalaureate Colleges, are each divided into four divisions: North, South, Midwest and West.
Twenty-six of the 42 IABCU institutions ranked by U.S. News & World Report were listed in the top tier of their respective categories. (BP, TAB)
