"These women read, they sing, and they brought the Spirit with them,” said Gayle Smith of Providence Baptist Church, Opelika. Smith serves as director of the 160 participants in the newly formed Alabama Singing Women.
Meeting alongside the Alabama Singing men Sept. 19-20 at Shocco Springs Conference Center, the women’s chorus made history in the state. The Singing Men helped create and promote the women’s chorus, which is the state’s first. The two groups will sing together at the Alabama Baptist State Convention in November in Birmingham.
Don Campbell, then-president of the Singing Men, headed up the task force of music leaders formed in February 2002 to promote the new chorus.
