Alabamians are very generous people,” said Barry Bledsoe during his report to the Alabama Baptist State Convention. “We rank in the top 10-some would say top five-in giving,” continued the president of the Baptist Foundation of Alabama. “But we rank near the bottom in contributing our assets.” Bledsoe pointed out that many Alabamians do without a will, in which case, assets revert to the state – assets that could be put to good use by entities such as the Foundation. Bledsoe encouraged messengers to consider contributing to the Foundation in the form of future planned gifts of assets and, in turn, to encourage others to do so.
“Make a Will Month is in January,” he said, “And last year, only about 1 percent of churches requested information on that.”
Bledsoe also briefly reported on Foundation activities in regard to two of its other primary areas; scholarship and investment management. Assistance in these and other financial areas is available to Baptists through the Foundation without cost or obligation.
According to the Book of Reports, positive changes that have occurred at the Foundation over the past year include a new computer system, a new state-of-the-art accounting system and the implementation of an academically sound investment management program.
