When it comes to fighting the lottery, Alabama has a secret weapon-Dan Ireland, executive director of Alabama Citizens Action Program (ALCAP). And Joe Bob Mizzell, director of Christian Ethics for Alabama Baptists, made sure Tennessee Baptists knew about Ireland when they began their own effort to fight a lottery almost two years ago.
While the two states would never expose their football secrets to each other, they are supporting each other in the fight against the lottery.
Mizzell continues to gather research and mail sermons and other information to churches across Tennessee. Ireland has a marathon speaking and preaching schedule.
“I will have spoken 35 to 40 times before its over,” said Ireland, who also preached at Tennessee Baptist’s 2001 annual meeting.
“I’m working in cooperation with the Tennessee Baptist Convention across the state, preaching and leading rallies,” Ireland said. “The convention has taken an outstanding stand on it. They are working real hard at it.”
The state has a strong, unified, interdenominational effort, he noted.
Tennessee Baptists have saturated the state with “helpful information,” Ireland said. “The people know. We just hope and pray that will turn out the vote.”
