As Greg Davis traveled around the state over the past two years, he noticed something — not many of the pastors he met knew who their State Senator or Representative was.
“They didn’t know their legislator — didn’t even know their name,” said Davis, president of Alabama Citizens Action Program.
Bridging the gap
He encouraged them to learn their legislators’ names and put them on their personal prayer list and their church’s. And then he decided to help bridge the gap even more.
“We’ve been coordinating some meetings with our associations and different groups of pastors and trying to connect them to their local legislators,” Davis said. “Where it’s appropriate, we bring in their legislators and let them hear from them and ask questions and get to know them.”
Next steps
If a Baptist association or group of pastors or leaders in the state is interested in setting up a meeting like this, Davis noted, or interested in having a legislator speak at a meeting they already have planned, ALCAP is “happy to help facilitate that.”
“We don’t even have to be there; we can just help connect them,” Davis said, noting that legislators have “been happy to do it.”
“It’s good for the pastors to meet them and know them, pray for them and be able to call on them as needed,” he said. “The legislators need to hear from the pastors.”
