A first-of-its-kind worship service for legislators kicked off the 2008 legislative session Feb. 5, calling on lawmakers to be “ministers of God.”
The service, held a few hours prior to the opening of the legislative session, marked the “first time in the history of the state legislature” that such a gathering occured, said Dan Ireland, executive director of Alabama Citizens Action Program.
Ireland, who led the service, spoke to those present about the connection between God and government.
“Government is God’s design — it is the minister of God,” he said, preaching from Romans 13:1–7.
He challenged them to “uphold one another” as they administer the law according to God’s standards.
“We have to do what honors the Lord and what’s good for the people,” Ireland said. (TAB)
