ALCAP leads moral agenda through legislation, education

Raising up a strong generation- that’s what Bill Day says the Alabama Citizens Action Program (ALCAP) is all about. And this year that effort broke records on all fronts, said Day, an ALCAP associate.

“We’re achieving beyond what we did last year. For the first time, we have more requests to send teachers than we have money to finance,” Day said.

Teachers sent across the state through ALCAP provided more than 90,000 youth with drug education during the 2003-2004 school year, Day said, and new programs- such as anger management classes- will seek to build up those who shun drug use by helping them with other important life issues.

“They (youth who resist drugs) are out there. We are trying to reach out and raise them up as a strong generation,” Day said.

New educational tracks such as wellness and life quality programs also allowed ALCAP into 29 state college campuses this year.

Earl Tew, chairman of the board for ALCAP, asked that Alabama Baptists continue to show support for Dan Ireland, ALCAP executive director, as he fights for what is best for the people of the state.

During the 2004 regular session of the Alabama Legislature, ALCAP monitored 68 bills and supported Alabama’s counties in their votes on moral issues, Tew reported.

“We are privileged to have someone of his (Ireland’s) caliber and influence working for us in the Legislature,” Tew said, noting Ireland was not present due to the death of his mother.
