A crowd gathered in the state’s capital city March 9 to pray for those who serve through work in government.
The event was organized by Alabama Citizens Action Program and featured several Alabama Baptist leaders.
ALCAP president and CEO Greg Davis greeted the crowd and introduced those on the platform. Joe Godfrey, who recently retired from the ALCAP president’s role, shared Scripture.
Prayers for each branch of government
Prayer leaders followed in this order:
•Jacky Connell, pastor of Eden Westside Baptist Church in Pell City, for the executive branch of state government.
•Jarman Leatherwood, second vice president of the Alabama Baptist State Convention, for the legislative branch.
•Rick Lance, executive director of the State Board of Missions, for the judicial branch.
Nate Williams of the Priority Talk radio show also assisted with organizing the event.
ALCAP leaders present with senators, representatives
Along with organizing the prayer rally at the Statehouse, ALCAP leaders plan to maintain a presence during the 2023 legislative session.
Davis also voiced the opening day prayer for the Senate on March 7 and is scheduled to provide the House prayer on March 14.
“ALCAP is in Montgomery ministering, monitoring and advocating on our churches behalf,” Davis said.
Along with advocating for issues such as religious liberty, sanctity of life and the biblical family, “we will stand against any expansion of destructive addictive behaviors,” he said.
“We know that when these type behaviors are further normalized and legalized our churches see the consequences when those harmed show up on the front door of our churches.
“Our churches are certainly there willing and ready to help people put their lives and families back together, but it’s heartbreaking to see the destruction that comes from so many unnecessary situations,” Davis explained. “We want to work to prevent the damage from ever being done in the first place.”
How individuals, churches can help
Individuals and congregations can help the ALCAP team through consistent prayer and staying informed.
“We had a great response to the second annual ALCAP prayer rally on the Statehouse steps,” Davis added. “This was a powerful time of Scripture and prayer for those who serve us in government.
“Prayer makes a difference,” he said. “We had officials from all branches of government represented in the audience.
“We encourage all churches to add their local legislators and other elected officials to their prayer list. Also, plan to join us the first week of February 2024 for the next prayer rally.”
