ALCAP Sunday — November 13

For many years, the second Sunday in November has been promoted as ALCAP Sunday. ALCAP (Alabama Citizens Action Program) is a church-sponsored ministry concerning moral issues.
   
The ministry of ALCAP is channeled through three basic programs: education, consultation and legislation. 
   
The drug education in the schools, detention centers, boot camps, college campus programs and youth organizations is directed by Bill Day and a team of trained teachers statewide. Sharon Cook in the ALCAP office coordinates assignments and provides research materials for this program.
   
ALCAP provides research and serves in an advisory capacity concerning local wet/dry elections and gambling issues. 
   
At this writing, assistance is being provided to Geneva County, where it is reported that a petition is circulating calling for a wet/dry vote. 
   
Currently there are 26 dry counties in Alabama. Chilton County may face such a vote, depending on a legislative matter.  The cities of Cedar Bluff, Jackson and Monroeville are being assisted with lawsuits on a constitutional matter concerning a recent wet/dry vote in those cities.
   
Legislatively, ALCAP is a voice for the faith community at the state and national level. A weekly prayer breakfast is provided for the Alabama Legislature with an attendance of 40­–50. ALCAP addresses legislative issues concerning all moral issues, i.e., alcohol, illicit drugs, gambling, pornography, pro-life, family matters, etc. 
   
Along with board member and attorney Eric Johnston, I assisted with amendments and speaking at committee meetings to write a constitutional amendment to appear on the ballot, June 6, 2006, defining marriage as the joining of one man and one woman in union and no other “marriage” or union from any jurisdiction in or out of the state of Alabama will be recognized as a legitimate marriage. This amendment must have a “Yes” vote!
   
ALCAP is financed entirely by churches. Through the Cooperative Program budget of the Alabama Baptist State Convention an allocation is designated for ALCAP, which represents 13 percent of ALCAP’s annual budget. In this calendar year, as of Sept. 30, 503 Alabama Baptist churches and 16 local Baptist associations have contributed directly through the ministry of ALCAP.
   
ALCAP is an extension of the ministry of each local church on the cutting edge of moral and ethical issues in the public square.  You do have a voice, and together ALCAP and you are making a difference.
